When did "the ask" become a thing?

Main Post:

The act of asking someone to do something has always been a request. Somewhere in the recent past people started referring to a request as "the ask". Can anyone shed some light on this?

Top Comment: "The ask" was more common before 1912 than it was from then to 1975, which is when it started its recent upswing. ngrams "Ask" as a noun has been part of our language for a very long time, although never to the extent it is now. https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/111597/the-ask-is-this-a-buzzword-or-just-bad-grammar

Why is this subreddit turning into Ask or Askreddit?

Main Post:

This sub is meant to be for answering stupid questions, kinda like r/eli5 . Now it just seems all the posts on here are questions like, “What is a movie you can always rewatch?”

Top Comment: Because as annoying as it is, it technically doesn't go against the sub rules. They are very stupid questions and much more suited as r/askreddit reposts but they still qualify here. I wish the mods would amend the rules to get rid of them as insincere karma farming or simply low effort posts.

People who ask Subreddits that are guaranteed to give the answer they want. It’s not an objective answer.

Main Post:

For example, asking a travel Subreddit if you should go on a trip. Of course, unless it’s to a war zone, they are going to tell you to go.

Describing abuse you were subjected to and then asking if you are the A-hole. Umm nobody is going to say Yes YTA.

It isn’t real validation or unbiased advice. It’s the answer they rubber stamp in that subreddit.

If you just need to hear that you should break up or go on a trip, tell yourself.

Top Comment: When someone goes onto a sub for a specific game and asks "Is this popular game worth playing?" The Stardew Valley sub isn't going to go "No, don't play this game." lmao
